Dexter Season 4 Finale “The Getaway” Review!
SPOILER ALERT – Do not read if you haven’t seen the season finale of Dexter “The Getaway” yet!
When John Lithgow was cast in Dexter season 4 I knew it was going to be a gang buster season. The entire entity of season 4 was nail biting to say the least! My review of episode 1, season 4 is here.
Trinity, the new “bad guy” for the season played by one of the best actors today, John Lithgow. Lithgow gave such a creepy performance it gave me nightmares (no joke) and had me looking at every 60 year old guy who was about 6′ 4″ with an aura of caution. Trinity can go from sweet old guy to downright terrifying with just a look in his eyes. He kills because he can’t help himself, sound familiar?
However the entire season played out to a very shocking finale. I was on the edge of my seat shaking and trembling waiting to see how it ends. Just when you thought ole Dex had it under control another wave hits him. He is so close to killing Trinity and is always 3 steps ahead of Miami Metro but 2 steps behind the Trinity killer.
After his sister Debra learns who Dexter really is, the brother of Brian Moser the “Ice Truck Killer” she starts having doubts about who he really is like the good cop she is… and Dexter is horrified now that she knows.
When Trinity (Aurthur Miller) was lying on Dexter’s kill table and giving his wisdom in a somber touching moment there was an underlying message as he said Dexter will never change, “it’s already over”. After a long teeth clinching episode its over, Dexter kills Trinity with some wisdom from the veteran serial killer in tow.
As Dexter dumps what’s left of Trinity over his boat at night with a red sky and a glowing moon in the background he contemplates his life with Rita and the kids and how he can change and all seems good in the land of Dexter again ending like all the other seasons on a “positive” note. Oh but wait... We then see Dexter enter his house to grab a bag to meet up with his wife Rita in the Keys, I knew this was bad as it should have ended at the boat scene.
Dexter calls Rita after to listening to her voice mail saying she had to come back the the house to pick up her ID and as Dexter’s phone rings… so does Rita’s coming from right there in the house! This is when the audiences stomach just drops.
Born in blood, baby Harrison is seen crying on the bathroom floor and now looks just like daddy did many years ago when Harry found him in that murderous storage locker. In the bathtub is Rita covered in blood up to her neck as she lay dead being the final victim of the Trinity killer, “it’s already over“. Trinity got to Rita and killed her while Dexter was out looking for him. They did not show the scene of Trinity killing Rita, but you know how it happened and is best left to the imagination, it’s more gut wrenching that way!
Dexter is reborn again on this ill fated night and will never be the same…
One of the best shows on television, the acting, cinematography, and writing is flat out excellent. This is a show you need in your DVD collection for sure and Dexter season 4 on iTunes coming soon.
