SAG Approves Feature-Primetime Deal!
Finally, Screen Actors Guild members have a new 2 year feature-primetime contract with an overwhelming 78% yes vote. The vote also represented a slap in the face to SAG president Alan Rosenberg and his allies who have insisted on holding out for a better deal – and going on strike if the congloms failed to comply. Rosenberg, who announced Tuesday before the vote that he’s seeking a third term, admitted he was surprised by the level of support for the deal. “It may be due to fatigue, fear and the economy,” Rosenberg said. “This contract will have a devastating impact.” Despite allowing the SAG master contract to expire a year ago, guild leaders wound up with essentially the same deal signed last year by the DGA, WGA and AFTRA.
As a UNION member myself, I have to agree with this deal although I don’t like it. I mean, look at the “primetime” we live in today, not nearly as many people are watching tv as they did 10, 20 years ago when it was in its true prime, with huge viewers each week and a lot of money to go around. Its true that eyeballs are more online now, even mine. Most of the “suits” (executive producers) today are cheapskates and have no creative heart in the TV & film business, they are just ivey league joboni’s with a business mind, not a creative mind like it once was and it shows! Just look at all the cookie cutter programs on “prime time”, to me they are virtually unwatchable, which makes me sad. Don’t misunderstand me, there are still a LOT of great shows on TV that I myself are loyal to, I’m just speaking “for the most part”…
The problem is these “suits” are scared to take a chance on anything different (like years ago, remember Married With Children?) and stick to the same old redundant formula thinking the public viewer will continue to watch. Well, guess what, they are not watching… And don’t get me started on all these “cookie cutter” (even these are on this track, and fast) gut wrenching reality shows choking up all the prime time slots. They are mostly non-union, which means cheap to make, cheap to pay, but big money for the studio suits.
However, New Media is on the horizon (more on that later), so lets hope the unions across the board are working on securing this new medium for our future, I know the WGA already is taking steps in that direction.
